Our children cannot live without play. We have to play with them. We also need to let them play on their own like educational toys. It is part and parcel of their wellbeing. It is fundamental in their development. Denying our children the right to play is like denying them a basic right to freedom.
There are many benefits of play. To begin with, play provides an opportunity for the parents and the teachers to interact fully with their children. It builds a friendly relationship and cultivates trust between the child and the parent or even the teacher. This is a perfect chance to learn and improve the social skills of a child. For example, working in a team, sharing and making good decisions. It is indeed an opportunity to better understand the needs of a child and how to satisfy them. It is also an avenue for the children to express themselves. According to the American Academy of Paediatrics, play allows children to creatively explore their world and conquer it. It boosts their emotional strength and develops their imagination as they look forward to adult responsibilities. Through play children are able to gain confidence, self belief and resiliency, qualities they need to face the challenges in their adulthood later on.
Not only does play for example playing with early learning toys develop our children socially and mentally, it also develops them physically. It makes them grow strong and healthy. Play is also important in schools too. It benefits the social, emotional and cognitive development of our children. It is a holistic approach that enriches our children and makes them all round, from academics to sports. That in essence should be the mission of every school.
Even though play is core in our children’s lives, most parents and teachers do not have time to play with their children because of the current modern lifestyle. However there is need for the teacher and the parent to set time aside for children’s play because it means a lot to their development. Do you remember the proverb? All work without play makes Jack a dull boy.
